Facebook and Microsoft want a piece of the metaverse

Metaverse:

A Metaverse combines virtual reality, augmented reality, and video, where users “live” within a digital world. In the metaverse, users can work, play, and stay in touch with friends, from concerts to virtual trips worldwide.

Can we expect to see it soon?

The CEO of the newly renamed Meta (formerly Facebook), Mark Zuckerberg, estimates the key features of the metaverse may take 5 to 10 years to become mainstream. However, aspects of the metaverse are already in place. And even though some people may not be able to access these technologies, ultra-fast broadband speeds, virtual reality headsets, and persistent online worlds are already available.

What are some examples of it?

  1. Meta:

Facebook has already invested heavily in virtual reality, including the 2014 acquisition of Oculus. Meta envisions a digital world where digital avatars connect through work, travel, and entertainment using virtual reality headsets. Zuckerberg believes the metaverse could replace the internet as we know it. “The next platform and medium will be the embodied, immersive Internet where you are part of the experience, not just watching it,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said after the company rebranded last month.

  2. Microsoft:

With its Microsoft Mesh platform, the software giant develops mixed and extended reality (XR) applications that combine the real world with augmented reality and virtual reality. Currently, the U.S. Army is working with Microsoft on an augmented reality Hololens 2 headset for soldiers to train and rehearse. In addition, Xbox Live already connects millions of video game players worldwide.

  3. Epic Games:

Epic Games is known for their commitment to building the global metaverse” as evidenced by their hosting of concerts by Ariana Grande and Travis Scott, music and trailer releases, and an immersive remake of Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 speech.

  4. Roblox:

Founded in 2004, the platform hosts scores of user-generated games, including role-playing games like Bloxburg and Brookhaven, where users can build homes, carry out jobs, and engage in role-playing scenarios.

  5. Minecraft:

Minecraft, owned by Microsoft, is also a popular virtual universe among children. Players can create their own digital characters and build whatever they like using it as a digital Lego. And as of August, Minecraft has more than 140 million monthly active users.
