Python remains the clear leader among engineering programming languages and engineers, beating Java and JavaScript in the IEEE Spectrum 2021 ranking of the top languages.

Its journal IEEE Spectrum taps members from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and other sources to produce its annual rankings of programming languages.

The top 20 included Arduino, Matlab, PHP, Dart, SQL, Ruby, Rust, Assembly, Kotlin, and Julia.

The number of members among electrical engineers is a significant factor in the popularity of languages. The IEEE Spectrum rankings are an indicator of which languages are worthy of time and effort to master. It is different from other popular language indexes like Tiobe and RedMonk’s developer analyst ranking.

RedMonk is a program that uses Stack Overflow and GitHub statistics to determine the rank of different languages and languages, ranked JavaScript at the top of the list, followed by Python and Java in its Q3 report 2021. Tiobe’s August 2021 uses the search engine query, features C as the top language, followed by Python, Java, C++, C++, Python, and C#.

A notable shift in the rankings for 2021 was Microsoft’s Number, which increased from 25th in 2020 to seventh in 2021. IEEE Spectrum speculates this was due to version 9.0 of C# released in the latter half of 2020. It’s a crucial component in Microsoft’s form-factor and cross-platform strategy to their .NET developer platform that includes .NET 5.
